Guided Localization

Improving VR localization for users

I designed a new user experience that encourages users to scan their environment and help the device identify the user's location, as well as spatial objects and anchors.

Previously, users were shown a confusing modal with unclear instructions.

Nodes would also use spatial audio to help direct users where to look.

Concept 1

Nodes

Placing virtual objects in the user's space gives them an experience to engage with, encouraging them to find the orbs to help localize the device.

Concept 2

Paint

The initial room view has visual effect applied. As the user scans the room, the view becomes clearer as the device localizes.

Paint begins to chip away as the device localizes in their space.

A mesh grid overlays the space to detect for anchors and objects.

Shipped Experience

Object Detection

Leaning on annotation data to identify real-world objects, Object Detection scans the user's environment for familiar elements and localizes itself based on what the user sees, currently patent-pending (Application No. 18/346,379)
